Boundary Waters 2003 Trip Report

September 20 thru September 28
(Entry September 21, Lake One)

Day Two – Lake Three to Williamson Island

Breakfast was French toast and syrup.

From my journal: “Four Lakes; Four Portages.  The portages weren’t bad; the 105 steep at the ends, but a nice portage.  The rough part, besides the 11 miles, was the wind.  It was a real factor in the energy expended, even though it was usually at our backs,  The waves in Insula caused us to change course.  The Lord protected and blessed us, but it was scary at times.

“We got away this morning around 11:30 after a night punctuated w/occasional sprinkles.  The wind, which had been from the east yesterday, was out of the west today.  Got to Williamson Island around 4 PM.

“ Nice island, OK campsite.  Hard to find bear tree and tarp fastenings, but there is a nice place on the waterfront for a hammock.”

I could tell we weren’t going to get early starts – the sun rises late up here.  That was the beginning of my thoughts of shortening the trip by a night.

Ethan’s feet were VERY cold by the time we reached the island.  He wouldn’t “dry foot it”, in spite of having shoes that didn’t drain.  I gave him my wife’s Sealskinz that I’d brought along just for such an occasion, and they fit nicely, so that resolved the cold foot problem, once Steve got them thawed out.

Dinner was beef lo mein with  TVP and tortillas.
